Damian Lillard may have had a great start to his Milwaukee Bucks career but unfortunately for the 33-year-old, he’s going through a major issue in his personal life.
Dame filed for divorce from his estranged wife, Kay’La Lillard, just days after his move to Milwaukee was made official. Kay’La has now filed for full custody of their three children, which has put the seven-time All-Star in quite the conundrum.
Damian Lillard’s Legal Issues Interfering With Milwaukee Bucks Commitments
The problem here is that Dame’s divorce proceedings are already taking its toll on his commitments to the Bucks. It was reported previously that his custody hearing has been scheduled for November 24 in Portland, which incidentally, is the same date when Milwaukee hosts the Washington Wizards at the Fiserv Forum.
This only means that Lillard will have to miss one of those two events, and as far as I know, it’s not a good look for him if he skips his custody hearing — not to mention the legal repercussions of the same.
This is exactly why Lillard’s camp is reportedly trying to have the hearing moved to a later date. According to a motion obtained by Whitney Vasquez of Radar Online, the seven-time All-NBA point guard is requesting a schedule change for the custody hearing:
“Petitioner is unable to appear at the hearing on November 24, 2023, due to a work-related conflict that he is unable to reschedule. Petitioner is a professional basketball player with the NBA, and he is contractually required to be in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 24, 2023 for an NBA Regular Season game and the preparations related thereto,” the motion filed on October 27 read.
Lillard’s attorneys have also indicated that they “are not available on November 24, 2023, due to existing conflicts,” arguing that the “petitioner should be entitled to have his attorneys available to represent his interests at the hearing in this matter.”
Whther or not this conflict gets resolved is one thing. You also have to ask if this is the only divorce-related matter that will potentially interfere with Dame’s commitments to the Bucks.
