The Milwaukee Brewers are in an interesting position at first base. Rowdy Tellez is not expected back until at least mid August after a bizarre injury sustained while shagging fly balls. Owen Miller does not have the typical build or power profile of a first baseman. Darin Ruf is out with the patella fracture and the organization moved on from Jon Singleton a few months ago.
One route Matt Arnold could take is to add a first baseman via trade. The trade deadline is a few weeks away and there are some reasonable targets out there such as CJ Cron, Mike Moustakas, and Bobby Dalbec. Justin Turner and Jeimer Candelario could be considered as well but first base is not their primary position. Players like Pete Alonso, Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Carlos Santana are all unlikely to become Brewers.
An internal option Milwaukee could turn to is Keston Hiura. He has been on fire this season in Triple-A. A knee injury caused him to miss some time but he has been back for quite some time now. With all that he has accomplished Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy recently hinted that we could see him in the big leagues soon.
Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Pay Murphy hints at Keston Hiura big league promotion.
According to 97.3 The Game, Pat Murphy had the following to say about a potential Keston Hiura promotion.
“Triple-A pitching and Triple-A hitting doesn’t always translate to the majors.”
“He’s done everything we asked. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sometime soon.”
It will be interesting to see if Pay Murphy’s comments hold true or if he himself is just speculating.
