It’s no secret that the Milwaukee Brewers struggle against left-handed pitchers. This has been ongoing over the past few seasons. One position that they have experimented with a platoon type rotation in order to get an extra right-handed batter in the lineup is first base.
Last year Keston Hiura saw quite a bit of time at first base against south paws. Unfortunately he has reverse splits and is no longer on the Brewers 40-man roster. This year they brought in Luke Voit, but again similar to Hiura he is much better against right-handed throwers.
After Luke Voit was designated for assignment Milwaukee brought in Darin Ruf. Ruf got off to a good start with the Brew Crew but unfortunately sustained a patella fracture after he crashed into a tarp in foul territory. With Mike Brosseau currently in the minor leagues this has left Owen Miller as the top option to platoon with Rowdy Tellez.
If the Milwaukee Brewers are still interested in acquiring a first baseman who excels against left-handed pitchers then they may want to turn their attention to a Boston Red Sox minor league player who could benefit from a change of scenery.
Could the Milwaukee Brewers look to target Bobby Dalbec of the Boston Red Sox?
Fenway Park
Bobby Dalbec is a big power hitter who has had success in the big leagues. The right-handed hitter and thrower belted 25 home runs for the Red Sox during his 2021 rookie season. He did strike out a lot that year and was not the greatest at drawing walks, but he also had 21 doubles and a .494 slugging percentage in 133 games.
Unfortunately his production dropped off in 2022 and this year he currently finds himself in the Red Sox minor league system. This year he has been working on becoming a more complete player that includes playing multiple infield positions as well as spending time in the outfield. He also has worked a lot on his speed and is stealing bases.
Recently Bobby Dalbec made some public comments regarding the potential of him being traded and the value that he would bring to a new organization.
“I think I can bring a lot of value to any team. Major league teams, for sure. I’m making myself more valuable by getting more experience in the outfield and shortstop here and there. I really enjoy playing the outfield. I feel like I hit really well when I’m out there. I don’t know if that translates — if that’s a real thing. But getting more and more comfortable out there. I’ve only played right (field). I took some fly balls in center today, which probably won’t happen.”
“I’ve worked hard on my speed the past couple of years. I think this is the most stolen bases I’ve had and attempted in a season. I’m going to continue to try to steal bases and try to be as close to a five-tool player as I can be as opposed to a three-true outcome (hitter) and a first baseman. Because I think my athletic ability will allow me to play multiple positions for a long time.”
Boston had publicly announced that they may shop him around prior to the trade deadline. Bobby Dalbec has two minor league options remaining and is a versatile player. All of this screams Milwaukee Brewers player. Whether or not a trade occurs Matt Arnold should at least be calling to see what the cost to acquire him is.
