On Monday night, the Milwaukee Brewers looked to prove they could stand alone at the top of the NL Central with a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After a collapsing 4-2 loss, the Brewers looked to redeem themselves during game two of this series. With right-handed pitcher Tobias Myers making his Major League debut, the Brewers put all their faith in the 25-year-old rookie. Even though Myers had a solid debut pitching five innings, Milwaukee could not get the offense going once again, suffering their third straight loss in a 2-1 ball game.
Milwaukee sits a half-game above the Chicago Cubs for first place in the NL Central with a 14-8 record. Pittsburgh, who is winners of two straight, have a 13-11 record, two games behind the Brewers for first place. With the final game of this series set for tonight, the Pirates can take full advantage with a sweep, and be down just one game in the NL Central to their division rival.
Milwaukee Brewers Suffer Third Straight Loss in 2-1 Game Against the Pirates
In his second straight game, Pirates designated hitter Andrew McCutchen hit a leadoff home run near the left field pole to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. Tobias Myers got his first Major League strikeout two batters later against Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes. Although he led up a leadoff home run, Myers rebounded nicely, pitching five innings allowing one run on four hits, and a walk while striking out four batters. After Myers, the Brewers placed reliever Jared Koenig on the mound.
The Brewers Offense is Lackluster Once Again
Pittsburgh would take a 2-0 lead after pinch-hitting first baseman Connor Joe ripped an RBI single into left field during the bottom of the sixth inning. Joe replaced Rowdy Tellez in the lineup. An inning and a half later, Brewers catcher Gary Sanchez knocked a solo shot on a 2-1 count out to left-center field. Milwaukee’s offense could not get anything going as they only had one run on three hits for the entire night. The Milwaukee Brewers must play better offensively if they want to reach their goal of clinching the NL Central once again.
Top Performances from the Brewers 2-1 Loss
Tobias Myers would take his first Major League loss of his career but pitched extremely well after giving up the leadoff home run to Andrew McCutchen. There’s an extreme amount of hope for the young rookie within the organization. Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bailey Falter allowed one one on three hits, and two walks while striking out eight Brewers in the win.
Both Pirates that scored each of their two runs were Pittsburgh’s top performers. McCutchen went two for four with an RBI, while Connor Joe went one for two with an RBI. For Milwaukee, Gary Sanchez went one for three with an RBI, while left fielder Joe Wiemer and second baseman Brice Turang went one for two in the Brewers third straight loss.
