For the Milwaukee Brewers the injury bug appears to have followed them into the second half of the season as first baseman Rowdy Tellez sustained a strange injury while shagging fly balls on Saturday, July 15. He ended up fracturing the tip of his ring finger and having 17 stitches placed in order to repair his nail bed. At minimum this will keep him out for 3-4 weeks.
Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez will be out minimum 3-4 weeks after an injury sustained while shagging fly balls.
Per Adam McCalvy Rowdy Tellez was shagging fly balls for conditioning purposes when the injury happened. Craig Counsell did witness it and indicated that it was not due to the first baseman ‘messing around’. Tellez had previously been on the IL with forearm inflammation but was expected to be activated on Tuesday for the series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
With Rowdy Tellez now going to be out longer than expected the team will continue to roll with Owen Miller at first base. He is not a traditional first baseman, but he has been steady offensively and has been improving defensively. On the flip side Tellez has been in a major slump at the plate that extends back to early May. From May 5 through today he is batting just .186 with a .528 OPS, three doubles, three homers, and 14 RBI.
All of this should make the Brewers trade deadline decisions far more interesting as they now may not have any choice but to trade for a bat and bring in a new first baseman.
