Yesterday afternoon, the Milwaukee Brewers took on the New York Mets at Citi Field for their Opening Day for the 2024 MLB regular season. While there was a heated exchange between the two teams, Brewers Opening Day starter Freddy Peralta pitched an absolute gem, giving up one run on one hit through six innings in Milwaukee’s 3-1 victory. His awesome Opening Day performance ties a franchise record that was set back in 2002.
While three different players each drove a run home, it was Christian Yelich who had the best performance of the day going three for four with a solo home run. Yelich certainly has the opportunity to show that he still has the capabilities to lead this team in multiple statistical categories which includes home runs. In a season where the NL Central seems like it can be controlled by any of the five teams in the division, the Brewers took a solid Opening Day win and if they keep performing like this throughout the regular season, the NL Central should be the Brewers for the taking.
Milwaukee Brewers Legendary Opening Day 3-1 Win over the Mets
Highly anticipated rookie Jackson Chourio was dealt a walk during his first-ever MLB plate appearance. Just a few pitches later, Chourio would nab his first career stolen base. The young rookie has a promising chance to lead the Brewers in stolen bases this season. He also became the youngest player to bat leadoff in their MLB debut since 1937. During the bottom of the second inning, New York would drive in the first run of the game, as right fielder Starling Marte drove a home run into left field.
It wouldn’t be until the top of the fourth inning that the Brewers tied this game up at one run a piece when Milwaukee’s left fielder Christian Yelich crushed a solo shot into right field. In the top of the fifth, Chourio recorded his first MLB hit, a lined ground ball that found its way into right field. With one out and runners at the corners, Brewers catcher William Contreras hit a sacrifice fly to right field. This allowed third baseman Andruw Monasterio to score home.
Chourio would record his first RBI during the top of the seventh inning. Although he hit into a fielder’s choice, this allowed a run to come home. Milwaukee would continue to dominate the rest of the game. Brewers closer Abner Uribe secured the save and helped the Brewers take a 3-1 Opening Day win on the road.
Milwaukee’s starting pitcher Freddy Peralta pitched six innings. He allowed one run on one hit, and a walk while striking out eight batters. Mets starting pitcher José Quintana pitched four and two-third innings allowing two runs on six hits, and two walks while striking out four batters. The Brewers will face the Mets for the second game of their three-game series today at 1:40 PM EST.
