The Milwaukee Brewers entered the 2024 season with one of the highest ranked farm systems in baseball. Baltimore had the consensus number one overall, but the Brewers were typically coming in second or third across several prospect ranking sites. With the calendar flipping to May this week let’s take a look at some studs and duds from each minor league level affiliate.
Milwaukee Brewers minor league affiliate April stud and dud: Triple-A Nashville Sounds.

- Stud: INF Tyler Black
Tyler Black has had a tremendous start to the season that has fans begging for him to be promoted to the big leagues. Late last year he started playing first base and that trend has continued into this year. At the plate the lefty logged 99 at-bats in 25 games, slashed .303/.393/.525, collected three triples, five home runs, and he walked 13 times compared to 16 strikeouts.
- Dud: RHP Carlos Rodriguez
After being the Brewers top minor league pitcher of the year each of the past two seasons it’s been a start to forget for Carlos Rodriguez. He got his feet wet in Triple-A last season and has struggled in 2024. He threw 27.2 innings this month, gave up 25 earned runs (8.13 ERA), walked 20, and recorded a 1.81 WHIP. His track record indicates that he is a much better pitcher than this so hopefully he can turn things around soon.

- Stud: RHP Tyler Woessner
Milwaukee’s former sixth round draft pick is off to a good start this year. Woessner, a starting pitcher, posted a 2.66 ERA over four starts. He covered 20.1 innings and struck out 29 batters. He has more strikeouts than teammate Jacob Misiorowski and additionally has been throwing a ton of strikes as he walked just four batters during this span.
- Dud: OF Lamar Sparks
Sparks is entering his second season in the Brewers organization after previously spending time out of affiliated baseball. His 2024 season is off to a very rough start. Over 15 games and 55 at-bats he has a .145/.190/.164 slash line with 23 strikeouts.
Milwaukee Brewers minor league affiliate April stud and dud: High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

- Stud: INF Gregory Barrios
In 2021 the Brewers signed well known prospect Jackson Chourio during the International Signing period. Along with him they inked Gregory Barrios. The now 20 year old is tearing it up in Wisconsin as he has more runs batted in (20) than games played (19). During his playing time he has accumulated a .357/.407/.529 slash line over 70 at-bats. He’s not a home run threat, but his nine doubles leads the team by a wide margin.
- Dud: RHP Edwin Jimenez
22 year old starting pitcher Edwin Jimenz has made four starts for the Timber Rattlers. He has thrown 21 innings, surrendered a team worst 14 earned runs (6.00 ERA), and opposing batters are hitting .321 off of him. Jimenez will need to turn things around quickly.
Milwaukee Brewers minor league affiliate April stud and dud: Low-A Carolina Mudcats
- Stud: 1B Tayden Hall
Hall is a former ninth round pick by the Brewers who is great at getting on base. A season ago he walked (49) more times than he struck out (40). He’s on pace to do that again this year but so far he has also been collecting his hits. The 21 year old has 26 hits across 65 at-bats (.400 batting average), a 1.067 OPS, and he walked 15 times compared to 13 strikeouts.
- Dud: OF Luis Castilo
It’s hard to pick a dud on a team that has been as good as the Carolina Mudcats, but from an offensive perspective Luis Castillo has some catching up to do. He started the year 10 for 72 (.139 batting average) and only has a .232 on-base percentage. Additionally he struck out 24 times.
