Green Bay Packers Greatest Player #82- Gerry Ellis
Gerry Ellis was not originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers. Instead, he was a seventh round pick (192nd overall) by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1980 NFL Draft. However, the Rams cut him before the season began.
Ellis was scooped up by the Packers and made an immediate impact. In his rookie season, he played 15 games, started 13 of them, and rushed for 545 yards and three touchdowns.
It was just the beginning of a six-year career with Green Bay that saw Ellis lead the team in rushing twice. He also led the NFL in yards per touch (6.7) in 1983 and yards per carry (5.5) in 1985.
Unfortunately, Ellis tore his Achilles tendon while volunteering at a youth football camp following the 1986 season. He never played in the NFL again.
