The Wisconsin basketball team has endured their fair share of struggles recently, but a key player might be close to returning.
Kamari McGee, a Junior guard for the Badgers basketball team, has been a pleasant defensive boost for Wisconsin off the bench this season. While McGee does not play a ton of minutes, he provides consistent defense and a much needed break for starters Chucky Hepburn and Max Klesmit. McGee injured himself over a month ago against Minnesota, but might return just at the right time.
Wisconsin Basketball Guard Kamari McGee Hopeful for Big Ten Conference Tournament Return
Thus far into the 2024 season for the Wisconsin basketball team, the story of the year has been turnovers and defense. When Wisconsin is able to limit their turnovers on offense and play solid defense against their opponents, they are one of the best teams in the country. However, that has not been the case this entire season as Wisconsin has also struggled through a rough patch or two.
Most recently, Wisconsin has seen a decline in their defensive production without one of their top defenders coming off the bench. Kamari McGee has been a defensive spark plug for the Badgers with his speed, size, and commitment to his assignment. When McGee guards someone, it is rare that they find a way past the young man.
McGee went down with an unfortunate ankle injury after rolling the same ankle twice in the same game. Since, McGee has nursed the injury with a walking boot and tried to remain off his feet as much as possible. The guard was originally supposed to return after a week or two, but now nearly two months later McGee is finally out of the boot.
Wisconsin Badgers Basketball In Need of Pleasant Defensive Boost
Since McGee went down with his injury, Wisconsin basketball has struggled to try and play the same style of basketball. While McGee may only play a handful of minutes, he provided much needed rest for the starters and rarely allowed any easy buckets. Without McGee, the starters look tired at times and the other options off the bench struggle to replicate what McGee does on the court.
Wisconsin basketball could use a defensive boost coming into the Big Ten Conference Tournament. Teams have already played the Badgers hard, but now with a potential spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line, expect them to play the Badgers even harder.
Can McGee Return In Time to Help the Wisconsin Basketball Team?
At this point in time, McGee is supposed to make his return for either the final regular season game, or the first conference tournament matchup. Head Coach Greg Gard confirmed McGee is back to practicing with the Wisconsin basketball team, but his first practices without the boot will be fairly light. Gard expects McGee to get a full week of practice in before considering a potential return.
