Jared Jones, rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been incredible to begin the 2024 season. The 22 year old recently had a dominating 25 whiff performance against the Milwaukee Brewers that included a strikeout of Brice Turang that may be a candidate for the punch out of the year. Additionally he cemented himself in the history books.

In the third inning of an eventual 4-2 Pirates win on Monday night Jared Jones got Brice Turang dazed and confused on a slider down and in. Turang went around on his swing, fell down, and could only stare back in disbelief at what had just happened. This strikeout may be an early season candidate for punch out of the year.

Right-handed hurler Jared Jones has been dominant this season and that was no different during his most recent start. His 25 whiffs tied a Pirates record for the most in a single game. Additionally he threw nine pitches of 100 MPH or over that included eight such pitches during the first inning. All together opposing Brewers batters struck out seven times in this game.

There is a lot to like with Jared Jones and the statcast numbers back up his 2.79 and 0.89 WHIP through his first five starts of 2024. Per Codify Jones’ nine pitches of 100 MPH+ in Mondays contest against Milwaukee was the most in Pirates history as Gerrit Cole owned the previous record with eight and was set in 2013. Additionally Sarah Langs added that his 98 whiffs to begin the year are tied for the eighth most by a pitcher during their first five starts of a season in the pitch-tracking era.
