Wisconsin Basketball: Can Greg Gard Save the Badgers ’24 Season Heading Into March?

The Wisconsin basketball team has suffered plenty of highs and lows thus far into the 2024 season, but it is not over quite yet for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin basketball has been ranked as high as sixth this season in the AP Poll Rankings, but has since dropped out of the top 25 following a series of losses. The Badgers fans have been demanding better basketball from Head Coach Greg Gard after failing to make the field of 64 last season, and now potentially letting it slip away this year. Now, Gard and Wisconsin basketball must hold-on for dear life in hopes of still making the NCAA Tournament.

The Wisconsin Badgers entered the 2024 season with high hopes following stellar additions to the team, despite not receiving the coaching change some fans wanted. While Social Media has been brutal to Head Coach Greg Gard, the Wisconsin basketball leader has continued to push ahead with the Badgers despite missing the NCAA Tournament a season ago.

Wisconsin began the 2024 season with tough back-to-back losses to Tennessee and Providence before winning their seven games in a row, including two ranked wins. The Badgers put up a fight at first against Arizona before struggling to put together anything offensively. Wisconsin bounced back once again with another six game winning streak following their loss to the Wildcats.

Head Coach Greg Gard has gotten an exceptional boost to the Badgers squad after adding transfer guard AJ Storr to the team. Storr has led the Badgers in scoring this year, but one player cannot do it alone, which has been the case for Wisconsin as of late.

After reaching as high as sixth in the top 25 rankings, Wisconsin basketball began to suffer from a similar issue they faced a season ago. The Badgers have struggled to play strong, consistent basketball for the entirety of the game which often allows teams into the game who should not be able to contend. For example, the recent losses to both Nebraska and Rutgers saw the Badgers play flat against their opposition before dropping the game.

In both games, Wisconsin struggled to play offense consistently as a team, and rather had specific players trying to push the envelope. Storr went 0-for-5 from deep against Rutgers and missed more shots (11) than any other starter attempted. Wisconsin basketball needs to play as a team to garner the best results, which will truly come down to their coaching.

There is no doubt that as of late coach Greg Gard has not been a fan favorite among the Badgers fans. Wisconsin basketball has struggled to reach their full potential under the talented coach, which has brought down heavy criticism upon him. Now, Wisconsin basketball will have five regular season games left to attempt to fix their season before the upcoming Big Ten Conference Tournament.
