Richard Sherman enjoyed a distinguished career as one of the top-corners in the league at one point. He won First-Team All-Pro 3x, five time pro bowler, and Super Bowl XLVIII champion but Sherman stated he knew his time in the league was over when he injured himself trying to cover this wide receiver.
Richard Sherman says trying to cover DeVonta Smith forced him to retire.
Sherman was interviewing Lane Johnson on his podcast (The Richard Sherman Podcast). He outlined that while he was staying with Smith well, he said he hurt his groin on a comeback route run by Smith. Sherman never started in the NFL after that game, and retired after the season.
First off you have to give credit to Sherman because hanging with an Alabama receiver who let’s be honest were created in a lab is an incredibly hard thing to do.
But If I were Sherman, I would have retired after this play

I don’t think that DeVonta Smith play had anything to do with Sherman retiring because simply he wasn’t as good as he once was. You let Sammy Watkins burn you off the line of scrimmage well that probably means you’re washed.
Sherman signed with the Bucs in September, 2021. So it’s not like he was going to play 10 more years anyways. If you’re a veteran player not signing a contract until August or September you’re probably not playing too many more years in the league.
Sherman after his playing career became the pre-game and postgame analyst for Amazon, joining a long-list of former NFL player who have made the transition from playing to working in the media.
Here’s the clip (Via The Richard Sherman Podcast).
