Training camp has not yet begun for Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, but they are already set to cut or trade one of his wide receivers. Denzel Mims, a second round pick in 2020, has struggled ever since he began his NFL career. As the Jets have added various pass catchers throughout the offseason, including former Green Bay Packers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, Mims’ chances of making the roster declined.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the Jets’ intention to release Mims if they cannot find a suitable trade partner. He did add, though, that numerous teams are have been in contact with the Jets about Mims and a trade is still possible:
The #Jets are planning to release WR Denzel Mims if a trade partner can’t be found, as @BrianCoz tweeted. Mims will have a chance for a fresh start soon.

Teams have been in touch with the #Jets on Mims, so a trade instead of a release is indeed a possibility.

What Passing Weapons Does Aaron Rodgers Have with the New York Jets?

Aaron Rodgers has a legitimate first round wide receiver for the first time in his career in Garrett Wilson, but beyond him the Jets’ pass catchers are not anything to be excited about. Below is a list of all the wide receivers currently on their 90-man roster along with their 2022 stats:
- Garrett Wilson: 83 receptions, 1,104 yards, four touchdowns
- Malik Taylor*: Did not play on a NFL team in 2022
- Diontae Spencer: Did not play on a NFL team in 2022
- Denzel Mims: 11 receptions, 186 yards
- T.J. Luther: Rookie
- Allen Lazard*: 60 receptions, 788 yards, six touchdowns
- Jerome Kapp: Rookie
- Mecole Hardman: 25 receptions, 297 yards, four touchdowns
- Xavier Gipson: Rookie
- Corey Davis: 32 receptions, 536 yards, two touchdowns
- Randall Cobb*: 34 receptions, 417 yards, one touchdown
- Irvin Charles: Rookie
- Jason Brownlee: Rookie
Based on previous years’ production, Mims would have been the sixth wide receiver on this team. For a former second round pick, that simply is not good enough.
Should the Green Bay Packers Try to Acquire Denzel Mims?

In a word: no.
Matt LaFleur wanted a veteran wide receiver on the team before the NFL Owners’ meetings, but has since changed his tune. Both LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst have stated on multiple occasions that they intend to go into the 2023 with their wide receiver room as is.
All Mims would do on the Packers roster is take valuable snaps and playing time away from the players the team is already intent on developing and counting on to produce in 2023. The Packers’ pass catchers may be unproven, but Mims has proven that he simply is not that good.
The Packers should take a hard pass on potentially acquiring him.
