The Milwaukee Brewers may not have played a baseball game on Monday, but they did suffer a massive loss. The club announced that starting pitcher Wade Miley is headed to the 15-day injured list (IL) with left elbow discomfort. The southpaw had been a welcome return to the rotation after a year stint with the Brewers in 2018. In 2023, Wade Miley has logged an impressive 3.06 ERA, 140 ERA+, and 1.153 WHIP.

How Do The Milwaukee Brewers Respond?
For a team that has struggled offensively, pitching successes have become necessary to remain contenders and find themselves leading the division. Losing the second-best arm in the starting rotation behind 2021 Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes will be an incredibly difficult challenge. This, however, isn’t Miley’s first injury of the season, as he missed several weeks due to an injury in May and had just thrown over 90 pitches in his most recent July 9 start, tossing 6 IP of scoreless baseball part of the Brewers 1-0 victory over the Reds before the All-Star Break. Before then, he had thrown 87 (5 IP), 74 (4 IP), 67 (6 IP), and 77 (5 IP).
This now puts further angst on the Brewers to get back ace starter Brandon Woodruff, who has been out since early April with a shoulder injury. This also heightens the pressure for the bullpen to continue locking down games and for whoever fills Miley’s rotation slot, be it Colin Rea or the yet-to-be-announced corresponding roster move. This may also force the Brewers to seriously pursue a starting pitcher on the trade market. Regardless of what happens, the Brewers will severely miss Miley’s stabilizing presence in the rotation, as we hope for further news that this will be a brief IL stint.
