The Milwaukee Brewers upgraded at first base at this year’s MLB trade deadline by acquiring switch hitter Carlos Santana from the division rival Pittsburgh Pirates. However a report has surfaced that they were exploring the idea of trading for New York Mets superstar Pete Alonso and were supposedly one of the most involved teams.
Milwaukee Brewers-New York Mets: Brew Crew was at the center of trade talks for first baseman Pete Alonso (report).
The Mets are in the middle of a rebuild that they do not anticipate taking too long, but Pete Alonso is set to be a free agent upon the conclusion of the 2024 season. This makes his future with the team questionable and unless an extension with the Mets occurs he will continue to be a highly sought after trade candidate.
Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic the Brewers were at the center of trade talks for him this July. He also disclosed what the starting point for a Pete Alonso package would look like.
Brewers Double-A outfielder Jackson Chourio, the No. 2 prospect on Keith Law’s most recent top 60, was not under discussion, a team source said. The Brewers’ other top-five prospects, according to MLB Pipeline, are outfielder Sal Frelick, Double-A catcher Jeferson Quero, Double-A right-hander Jacob Misiorowski and Triple-A third baseman Tyler Black. Any of those players potentially could have been the centerpiece of an Alonso trade.
