Just recently, the Atlanta Hawks surprised everybody when the received the number one pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks are projected to use their 23rd pick on a promising wing from the Kansas Jayhawks.
After a disappointing season that saw the Trae Young-led team fail in the Play-In Tournament, Atlanta won big when they went home with the first overall pick. With only a three percent chance of doing so, the Hawks jumped nine places in the draft order to get the top prize.
While the Hawks getting the number one pick certainly surprised everybody, this isn’t the first time in NBA history a team with worse odds ended up with that certain selection. The 1993 Orlando Magic, 2008 Chicago Bulls, the 2011, and 2014 Cleveland Cavaliers all had worse chances than Atlanta but took the first pick during the drafts that occurred in those years.
Meanwhile, the Bucks are slated to get two picks – the 23rd and either the 33rd. The former came from a pick swap with the New Orleans Pelicans, a move that originated in the Jrue Holiday trade in 2020. The latter, on the other hand, will come from the Portland Trail Blazers.
Milwaukee Bucks Projected To Select Kansas Jayhawks Win In Mock 2024 NBA Draft
Even though the Bucks will be selecting late into the first round, they still have the chance to infuse the current roster with an intriguing prospect. In a mock draft written by Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo for ESPN, Milwaukee is projected to pick Kansas’ John Furphy:
“The Bucks will need to continue to space the floor adequately for their superstars, which means continuing to add shooting at every position. A 6-foot-9 wing like Furphy who can make shots while also contributing in the open floor and as a cutter could be interesting both in the short and long term for Milwaukee, which will also likely explore trades if more ready-made players are offered here,” Givonny wrote.
In the 18 games Furphy played in the NCAA Tournament, the Kansas Jayhawks’ wing averaged 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per contest. He also connected almost 50 percent of his field goals, 36 percent from deep, and 78 percent from the free throw line.
The upcoming 2024 NBA Draft will occur on June 26 and 27 with the first and second round happening in each night. It remains to be seen whether Milwaukee will actually draft Furphy, another player, or use the pick in a trade.
