The St. Louis Cardinals entered a Mother’s Day match up against the Milwaukee Brewers riding a seven game losing streak in which they also had lost their last eight games against the division rival Brewers. Both losing streaks were snapped after they emerged victorious by a score of 4-3, but in the third inning, after winning a pair of challenges, manager Oli Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso were ejected. This left hitting coach Turner Ward as the acting manager.
Oli Marmol and Daniel Descalso were ejected during the third inning of the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers Mothers Day game.

After a frustrating week and first few innings of a Sunday finale Oli Marmol and Daniel Descalso both let out some steam and were ejected. The timing was a bit unusual as Marmol was forced to challenge a pair of plays at first base within the first three innings in which both replays were successfully over-turned. After the second challenge Marmol and Descalso got heated and were tossed.

What plays/calls led to Daniel Descalso and Oli Marmol reaching their breaking point and getting ejected?

During a 42 pitch first inning from Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas a high strike to Rhys Hoskins was missed and resulted in a bases loaded walk. Following this Marmol had to challenge a pair of plays at first base that umpire Sean Barner got wrong. The first was in the bottom of the second inning when Brewers batter Brice Turang was incorrectly called safe at first base. In the top of the third Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera was initially called out after an around the horn double play but he was actually safe.
Here is the play that set off #STLCards manager Oliver Marmol and bench coach Daniel Descalso. They had to challenge this out call — the second of the day — and they were correct both times for overturns.

Oli Marmol explains his reasoning behind the bizarre timing of his ejection.

Per MLB.com reporter John Denton there was a reason why Marmol did what he did. Interestingly Marmol did not list the strike zone as a reason or frustration with calls on the field. Rather he wanted to provide a spark to his team that had been slumping and hadn’t won a game in over a week.
“Alan Porter and [first base umpire] Sean Barber are good umpires, and that had more to do with getting something going. Those guys do a nice job, and their job is tough. But, at times with a little skid, you’ve just got to get something going.”
