The Milwaukee Brewers next group of homegrown players are breaking into the big leagues and they are being referenced as “the freshman”. This nickname came from a video documentary series that the team released during spring training. Right now, Brice Turang, Garrett Mitchell, and Joey Wiemer are all playing for the Brew Crew and showcasing their skills. One area that they all excel in is speed and that was on full display during Sunday’s series finale against the Cubs.
How fast were the freshman in Sundays Milwaukee Brewers vs Chicago Cubs game?
During the fourth inning, all three of “the freshman” impacted the game with their speed. Garrett Mitchell hit a stand up triple on a ball hit into the right field corner. His first to third time was 11.43 seconds. If we compare that to 2022 speed metrics, that would have put him in the 94th percentile.

After the triple, Brice Turang recorded an infield single. Cubs second basemen Nico Hoerner made a spectacular diving grab on a grounder, but the throw to first base was not in time for Turang was cruising at a speed of 29.9 feet/second. If you convert that to miles per hour, he was moving at 20.36 MPH.

Mitchell: 28.4 ft/sec = 3B
Turang: 29.9 ft/sec = infield 1B
Wiemer: 28.6 ft/sec = beats DPCan’t teach speed. #ThisIsMyCrew

Last up in the fourth inning was Joey Wiemer. He hit what should have been a routine double play ball, but he busted it down the first base line and ended up being safe and kept the inning alive. Statcast had him moving at 28.6 feet per second, which equates to 19.5 MPH.
In this game alone, there were numerous other occasions where “the freshman’s” speed impacted the game. Defensively, second baseman Brice Turang was constantly being seen all over the field. Additionally Joey Wiemer played a great right field and looked like an experienced veteran who had played in Wrigley on numerous occasions.
On the bases, in the sixth inning both Brice Turang and Joey Wiemer advanced on a ball in the dirt that was not too far away from the Cubs catcher. Both players later ended up scoring on a bloop outfield single from Jesse Winker in which Wiemer nearly caught Turang.

The moral of the story is that these three players are all extremely fast and they utilize this speed in all facets of their games. It is a lot of fun to watch them go about their business on the ball diamond and there should be plenty of exciting plays to come from this group in the future.
