Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes and San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto are two players who are consistently being mentioned in MLB trade rumors. Corbin Burnes has one more year of team control remaining and is projected to make $15.1 MM in 2024. Juan Soto is in a similar situation but is projected to be owed $33 MM.
So far this off-season there have been conflicting reports regarding both the Brewers and Padres desires to trade their star players. Whether or not a trade occurs one team that is reportedly heavily pursuing Juan Soto is the New York Yankees. Coincidentally San Diego is interested in Corbin Burnes. This begs the question as to if a block buster three team trade could work or not.
Milwaukee Brewers-San Diego Padres-New York Yankees: Could a blockbuster trade work involving both Corbin Burnes and Juan Soto?
Bob Nightengale of MLB Network and USA Today indicated that the Padres and Yankees talks for Juan Soto have stalled out. He indicated that New York feels that San Diego’s request of numerous players in exchange for Juan Soto is unrealistic. San Diego is also reportedly trying to trade former Brewers outfielder Trent Grisham who is projected to make $5 MM in 2024.
For Milwaukee they took advantage of an opportunity like this last off-season when the Oakland Athletics and Atlanta Braves needed a third team in order to execute a trade centered around Sean Murphy. The Brewers swept into those negotiations and ended up coming away with William Contreras, Joel Payamps, and Justin Yeager.
If Milwaukee was to get San Diego and New York on the phone it wouldn’t be to get Juan Soto in a Brewers uniform. It would be more likely for Juan Soto to go to the Yankees, Corbin Burnes the Padres, and the Brewers receive players that will help them for years to come.
Three team trades rarely come to fruition, so it’s unlikely that a deal involving two of the game’s biggest stars ends up working out for all parties involved. However, given the fact that the Brewers and Padres have high expectations regarding return packages and that talks between San Diego and New York have reportedly stalled out this scenario is at least worth exploring.
