The Milwaukee Brewers are at a bit of a crossroads this off-season. They non-tendered Brandon Woodruff earlier this off-season, but star players Corbin Burnes and Willy Adames remain under team control for one more season and Devin Williams two. They have an exciting group of players that are expected to be the next wave of MLB contributors and they are on the brink of signing Jackson Chourio to a historic contract.
That being said there is a lot at play right now for GM Matt Arnold and one big question facing him and the front office is how competitive will the Brewers be in 2024? MLB Network Insider Joel Sherman recently talked about this same question and he tied it into the Jackson Chourio contract extension that has not officially been announced yet, but is seemingly going to happen according to multiple reports.
MLB Network Insider Joel Sherman connects the Milwaukee Brewers trading Corbin Burnes, Willy Adames, and Devin Williams in the aftermath of Jackson Chourio and his historic contract extension.
On air Joel Sherman discussed how difficult of a decision the Brewers have, but he suggested that if they want to fully embrace the next wave of talent that they should contemplate trading away three big assets this winter.
“You have to think of this as a broader picture Milwaukee Brewer issue. David Stearns kind of stepped aside last year and now he is completely away with the Mets and is running their baseball operations. Craig Counsell left. We are turning the page on that Brewers team and the new team is going to be led by (Jackson) Chourio.”
“They are trying to turn this team over and it leads to the bigger question. They say they are trying to compete for the NL Central this year and they internally believe it, but do they say ‘let’s turn it over completely’. Corbin Burnes is a free agent a year from now. Willy Adames is a free agent a year from now. Devin Williams is a free agent two years from now.”
“Do they go out and say lets go out and build as big of a prospect base around what we are already putting in the major leagues and we are now doing the next Brewers team in complete. Or do they keep those players (Corbin Burnes, Willy Adames, Devin Williams) along with Christian Yelich and the younger players and go for it in 2024, at least until the trade deadline.”
Joel Sherman does bring up some good points that Milwaukee has to figure out. The good news is that a decision truly does not have to be made this winter. Milwaukee could go into 2024 desiring to compete with a solid mix of veteran and young players and sell later in the summer should things not go according to plan. Waiting to trade any of Corbin Burnes, Willy Adames, and Devin Williams may slightly decrease their return capital but it shouldn’t significantly alter their trade value.

Yelich and his ridiculous salary should have to be included in any trade involving Burnes or Williams. And don’t trade any of those players mentioned, to Shitcago or the Mets. Screw Counsell and Stearns.
