The Milwaukee Brewers handed rival pitcher Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals his 200th career win eight days ago after a vintage performance from the 42 year old. Now prior to the two teams starting their final series of the year he has announced that he has thrown his last pitch and will retire at seasons end.
Rival pitcher of the Milwaukee Brewers Adam Wainwright says he has thrown his last pitch and the long time St. Louis Cardinals player is going to retire.
Adam Wainwright had quite a bit to say when speaking with the media prior to the Brewers and Cardinals series kicking off. Here is his explanation on where he is at mentally and that he is firm on his decision to retire.
“I’ve thought a lot about it the last few days, but I’m in a really good place mentally. No regrets about anything I ever did, no second thoughts of, am I making the right decision on pitching or retiring. I’m at peace with all of it in this spot that I’ve never been. I’ve literally left everything I had out there, for real.”
His incredible performance against the Brewers was mentioned a few times. That outing, where he secured his 200th career win, will go down as the last start of his career.
“I knew the day after I pitched that it was going to be very hard for me to throw a ball competitively ever again. I felt kind of like Kevin Costner in that movie where I’m thinking, I can do this one more time (in regards to his final pitch).”
Throughout his 18 year career Adam Wainwright will finish with remarkable statistics against the Brewers. In 322 innings and 48 starts he will finish with a 2.68 ERA against Milwaukee that includes seven complete games and three complete game shutouts. Opposing Brewers hit just .237 against him and his 279 strikeouts against Milwaukee is the most when compared to all other teams.
Adam Wainwright will now be the third Cardinals player to retire in the past two years in which they feasted on the Brewers. Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina were to two St. Louis players who retired a season ago.
