Adam Wainwright, who has spent his entire career with the St. Louis Cardinals, entered an elite club on Monday night after he earned his 200th career win during a 1-0 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The 42 year old now joins Justin Verlander, Zack Greinke, Max Scherzer, and Clayton Kershaw as the only active pitchers with 200 wins. He also is just the third Cardinals pitcher to reach this achievement with Bob Gibson and Jesse Haines being the other two.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright collected his 200th career win against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Against the Milwaukee Brewers Adam Wainwright looked like his vintage self. He threw seven innings of shutout baseball, allowed just four hits, walked two, and struck out three. On two different occasions he got big double play balls and reliever John King got a third one in the eighth. Closer Ryan Helsley secured the win with a multi inning save.
Across his 18 year career Adam Wainwright has had tremendous success against the Brewers. The only team that he has more wins against is the Pittsburgh Pirates, but entering tonight he had a 2.74 ERA over 315 innings against Milwaukee.
What is ironic about his dominant performance against the Brew Crew is that seven innings pitched was his longest outing of the season. Prior to tonight he had made an appearance in the seventh inning just one other time with that instance occurring on June 17. It is incredible that he was able to put his 2023 seasons struggles behind him and reach an important career milestone against a familiar divisional foe.
