The Milwaukee Brewers recently held their annual end of the year press conference. During this time GM Matt Arnold answered questions from members of the media that ranged from injury updates, thoughts on the season, and plans for 2024. One interesting comment made was unprompted and it mentioned a top infield prospect being in strong consideration for playing time in early 2024.
Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold is strongly considering prospect Tyler Black figuring into the infield equation early on in 2024.
During the 2023 season Tyler Black exceeded expectations by a wide margin. The former 33rd overall pick in the 2021 draft struggled to stay healthy in 2022, but he managed to stay on the field this summer and narrowed his defensive focus down to third base and first base.
Across Double-A and Triple-A his numbers at the plate were incredible as he had a combined stat line of .284/.417/.513 with 25 doubles, 12 triples, 18 home runs, and 55 stolen bases. He is another contact oriented hitting prospect in Milwaukee’s farm system who also has impact speed.
Looking ahead to 2024 the Brewers may have openings at both first and third base. Carlos Santana and Josh Donaldson are both set to become free agents, Mark Canha has a pending club option, and Rowdy Tellez is a potential non-tender candidate this off-season.
Players left on the roster who are also in consideration for playing time at first or third base include Andruw Monasterio and Owen Miller. At times both played big roles on the team last year. Abraham Toro is also a player on the 40-man roster, but he did not factor into the equation a whole lot a season ago.
A lot can happen between now and opening day, but for now it appears as if the Milwaukee Brewers are strongly considering utilizing Tyler Black early on in 2024. With the numbers he put up in the minor leagues this year he certainly is deserving of an opportunity.
