A Love Story and a Hockey Legacy
Martha and Bob Johnson’s love story began at the University of Minnesota, where they met and later married in 1953. Their shared passion for hockey would shape their lives and leave a lasting impact on the sport. Martha played a vital role in building community support for the Badger hockey team while Bob served as head coach. Together, they celebrated three national championships, elevating the program to new heights.
A Hockey Enthusiast and Innovator
Martha’s influence extended beyond the collegiate level. During Bob’s tenure as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, Martha suggested the creation of the team’s iconic mascot, Iceburgh. That season, the Penguins went on to win their first-ever Stanley Cup, forever linking Martha’s creativity and enthusiasm with the team’s success. Iceburgh remains a beloved figure in Penguins’ lore.
Martha embraced a life of travel, accompanying her husband throughout his coaching career. Her obituary highlights her love for the game and her role in supporting every team Bob coached. Whether it was ringing a cowbell at Wisconsin Badgers games or making impactful suggestions for the Penguins, Martha’s spirit and dedication were instrumental in creating memorable hockey moments.
Continuing the Legacy for the Wisconsin Badgers
Martha’s legacy extends to her family. She was not only a devoted wife but also a mother to current Wisconsin Badgers Women’s Hockey Coach Mark Johnson. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Mark has led the Badgers’ women’s hockey program to an astounding seven NCAA National Championships, carrying on the Johnson family tradition of hockey excellence.
