The Green Bay Packers are going into the 2024 season with expectations of being competitive for a very long time. The hype surrounding one of the youngest teams in the NFL is palpable.
Today, the Packers made a decision that will continue to impact that future.
The Green Bay Packers Name Their Next CEO
Our very own Robin Adams covered the breaking news earlier today:
According to the Packers’ website, Policy released the following statement:
“I am incredibly honored, excited and grateful to the search committee, the Board, the shareholders and the entire organization for this treasured and one-of-a-kind opportunity. I am particularly grateful to Mark for 12 years of mentorship. I am looking forward to building on his leadership and considerable success on and off the field.
“This is the absolute best job in sports. We are the stewards of the most iconic and unique organization in all of professional sports. I am excited to continue to work with so many talented teammates who have ensured the Packers’ consistent success on and off the field. We are the people’s team, and I love being a part of it.”
Policy is in his 13th year with the Packers and his seventh as the team’s chief operating officer. He and Murphy will work together over the next year to ensure that there is a smooth transition.
As mentioned, Murphy became the Packers’ President and CEO in 2007. Prior to coming to Green Bay, he had been the athletic director at Colgate from 1992-2003, and at Northwestern from 2003-2007. Murphy also played in the NFL himself from 1977-1984 with Washington.
Since he became the de facto owner of the Packers, Green Bay has gone through many changes. They moved on from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers in 2008, and then from Rodgers to Jordan Love last season. Additionally, Murphy was instrumental in the building of the Titletown District outside Lambeau Field.
Of course, the Packers won Super Bowl XLV in the early years of his tenure. However, perhaps his crowning achievement came very recently with his successful bid to host the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay.
