The Green Bay Packers are one of the most unique teams in all of professional sports. Unlike other teams, they do not have an owner. Instead, they are run by a board of directors who vote on a President and CEO of the franchise. This person acts as the de facto owner, representing the Packers at the NFL owners’ meetings and other important events.
Since 2007, Mark Murphy has served as the President and CEO of the Packers. His time in this role, however, is soon coming to an end. Due to the organization’s rules, a person must step down as President and CEO when they are 70 years old. Murphy will turn 70 in 2025, so the Packers have been searching for his replacement.
On Monday morning, it was announced that the search was over.
The Green Bay Packers Name Ed Policy as Their Next President and CEO
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported on X (formerly Twitter):
The #Packers board of directors voted unanimously this morning to approve Ed Policy as the franchise’s new president and CEO, per sources — a move that will make Policy the de facto owner of the NFL’s only community-owned franchise, starting in July 2025.

According to the Packers’ website, Policy released the following statement:
“I am incredibly honored, excited and grateful to the search committee, the Board, the shareholders and the entire organization for this treasured and one-of-a-kind opportunity. I am particularly grateful to Mark for 12 years of mentorship. I am looking forward to building on his leadership and considerable success on and off the field.
“This is the absolute best job in sports. We are the stewards of the most iconic and unique organization in all of professional sports. I am excited to continue to work with so many talented teammates who have ensured the Packers’ consistent success on and off the field. We are the people’s team, and I love being a part of it.”
Policy is in his 13th year with the Packers and his seventh as the team’s chief operating officer. He and Murphy will work together over the next year to ensure that there is a smooth transition.
The Legacy of Mark Murphy as the Green Bay Packers President and CEO
As mentioned, Murphy became the Packers’ President and CEO in 2007. Prior to coming to Green Bay, he had been the athletic director at Colgate from 1992-2003, and at Northwestern from 2003-2007. Murphy also played in the NFL himself from 1977-1984 with Washington.
Since he became the de facto owner of the Packers, Green Bay has gone through many changes. They moved on from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers in 2008, and then from Rodgers to Jordan Love last season. Additionally, Murphy was instrumental in the building of the Titletown District outside Lambeau Field.
Of course, the Packers won Super Bowl XLV in the early years of his tenure. However, perhaps his crowning achievement came very recently with his successful bid to host the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay.
