Brice Turang, rookie second baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, has made quite the name for himself during his first week in the big leagues. He’s impacting the game in all phases and has shown flashes of brilliance with all five tools in speed, throwing, fielding, hitting for average, and hitting for power. This has caught the eye of several and MLB network recently compared him to star AL West shortstop J.P. Crawford.

How does Brice Turang compare to J.P. Crawford?
Both Brice Turang and J.P. Crawford were first round picks as shortstops out of High Schools in California. Turang was out of Santiago High School and Crawford Lakewood High School. 2023 is Turang’s fifth season in professional baseball and he made his MLB debut on opening day. Crawford got his feet wet in the big leagues in 2017, which was his fourth season in professional baseball, and took over an everyday role a season later.
At the plate, both hit from the left side and are contact oriented guys in which their power comes from their ability to hit baseballs into the gaps. Crawford has a career strikeout rate of just 17.6% and a slugging percentage of .357.
Defensively, both throw with their right hands and are plus defenders. With Seattle, Crawford is primarily used as a shortstop. In Milwaukee, Turang is a second baseman but he can play shortstop as well.
Throughout six Major League seasons Crawford has had a positive WAR every year and overall has been 8.6 wins above replacement. In the video above, MLB network describes Turang as a player who can impact the Brewers right now and help them win games. Time will tell if he can put up a positive WAR or not, but so far the outlook is good.
There are quite a few similarities between these two players, so it’s cool to see them compared together.
