Milwaukee Brewers All-Star outfielder Christian Yelich is having a great 2024 season. A back injury early on in the season kept him sidelined for nearly a month but he eventually met the minimum plate appearance threshold and as of July 24 he is the National League leader in batting average. Unfortunately he “could be” looking at another stint on the injured list as he left Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs early.
Christian Yelich left Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs early.

After rain delayed Tuesday night’s first pitch by 85 minutes the Brewers went on to defeat the Cubs 1-0. In the eighth inning Rhys Hoskins pinch hit for Christian Yelich. An at-bat prior Yelich did not look comfortable running down to first base and it was later revealed that he was removed from the game due to back discomfort.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has a history of back issues.

Re-occurring bouts of back pain have been an issue for Christian Yelich throughout his career. Earlier in 2024 he missed games spanning from April 13 to May 8 due to his back. Last fall he didn’t land on the injured list but he missed games in September due to his back. Yelich has gotten better about not playing through the initial bouts of pain and “catching it early”. Even though manager Pat Murphy said he “could be” looking at another trip on the injured list the hope is that he won’t be sidelined for a long period of time.
How will this affect Christian Yelich’s chances at winning another batting title?

Per MLB.com a batting must record at least 3.1 plate appearances per scheduled league game in order to qualify for the batting title. 3.1 multiplied by 162 (total number of regular season games) equates to 502 plate appearances. Christian Yelich currently has 315 plate appearances this season. With 62 games left in the season he needs approximately 187 more plate appearances in order to qualify at seasons end.
