On Monday night, the Milwaukee Brewers started a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs where Milwaukee’s offense looked weak during a 3-1 loss. Brewers manager Pat Murphy had three perfect words to summarize the team’s loss to Chicago Monday night. The following night, the Brewers were able to take a 1-0 win on the road as their pitchers were highly effective in this contest. Now, the stakes in the final game of the final series between these two divisional rivals have risen significantly.
Milwaukee is 58-43 after Tuesday night’s victory. They are five games above the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central division. For the Cubs, they move to 49-54 with the loss. Chicago is 10 games behind the Brewers for first place in the division. The Cubs are also tied for last place within the division with the Cincinnati Reds.
Milwaukee Brewers Pitchers Are Effective in 1-0 Win Over the Cubs
During the bottom of the second inning, Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea escaped a huge bases-loaded jam by getting Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner to ground out. Rea was clutch once again this time during the bottom of the fifth. With runners at first and second base, Milwaukee’s starter struck out Cubs designated hitter Seiya Suzuki.
Brewers Wild Eighth Inning Leads to the Win
Even the Cubs played magnificent defense, making sure they did not allow their divisional rival to score. During the top of the sixth inning, Chicago’s third baseman Christopher Morel make a fierce throw to home to nab Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell at the plate. A few innings later at the top of the eighth, Brewers left fielder Jackson Chourio hit a line drive single to center field. Chourio tried to advance to second base but was tagged out during the same play.
While it would have been nice to have Chourio at second to make it a runner at second and third situation for Brewers second baseman Brice Turang, it did not matter in this one. Turang hit an RBI single to center field, scoring the first run of the game for either team. Things did get a little weary for Milwaukee at the bottom of the eighth when they once again escaped a bases-loaded situation as Brewers reliever Jared Koenig got Cubs pinch hitter David Bote to fly out to center field. The Brewers pitching staff was able to get the job done in the ninth to pull off a 1-0 win.
Top Performers from the Brewers 1-0 Win
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Colin Rea pitched five innings allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters in the win. Jackson Chourio was the only Brewers batter to record a multi-hit game. Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon pitched seven and one third innings allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three batters. Both Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson recorded a multi-hit game during the loss.
