The Milwaukee Brewers are going to give some rookies opportunities to play in 2023. This is exciting, but rookie baseball players tend to go through ups and downs during their first season. For the Brew Crew, Garrett Mitchell and Brice Turang are two players who should receive quite a bit of playing time next season. Here, we take a look at how the steamer projection system believes they will perform in 2023.
2023 Season Projections: Garrett Mitchell – .242/.317/.385/.701, 99 wRC+, 1.7 fWAR.
Mitchell spent the last month of the 2022 season in the big leagues. His strikeout numbers were high (41.2%), but he finished with a .311 batting average, stole eight bases, and had a few clutch hits including a walk-off against the Yankees.
At first glance, Mitchell’s 2023 steamer projections are a bit underwhelming. In addition to the statistics in the heading, steamer has him playing in 109 games, collecting 93 hits, 18 doubles, 11 home runs, and 46 RBI. All of this gives him a 99 wRC+, which means that he is projected to be just under league average offensively when compared to other outfielders around the league.
2023 Season Projections: Brice Turang – .244/.317/.366/.683, 94 wRC+, 1.3 fWAR.
Turang was added to the 40-man roster earlier this off-season. He has a good chance at making the Brewers opening day roster and will be competing for an every day spot at second base. Steamer has him projected to play 102 games next year.
Similar to Mitchell, Turang’s slash line, wRC+, and fWAR are not eye popping. He’s projected to collect 83 hits with just 24 of them going for extra bases. Of the extra base hits, 16 are doubles, one is a triple, and seven are home runs. On the base paths, Turang is projected to steal 12 bases.
