The Milwaukee Brewers recently found out that starting pitcher Wade Miley will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. Injury to this ligament is a major risk with pitchers, but at 37 years old there is automatically some concern that this could be a career ending surgery for him. When asked about it Miley indicated that he had other plans.
Wade Miley has had several injuries throughout his career.
Since initially joining the Brewers in 2018 Wade Miley has seemingly had an injury every other year that has cost him a significant amount of time. His 2018 season with Milwaukee didn’t start until after the half way point, but he was brilliant when he returned. In 2019 he then made 33 starts with the Houston Astros, four in 2020 with the Cincinnati Reds, 28 in 2021 also with the Reds, nine in 2022 with the Chicago Cubs, and then 23 a season ago with the Brewers.
The Milwaukee Brewers re-signed Wade Miley prior to the start of the 2023 season.
Wade Miley declined his half of a mutual option last off-season and became a free agent. He ended up re-signing with the Brewers with a deal that included a mutual option for the 2025 season worth $12.00 million. Their deal also included a limited 10 team no-trade clause and a $1 million re-assignment bonus is traded.
Wade Miley wants to end his career on his own terms and has more left in the tank.
In a video from Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel when Miley was asked about his future following Tommy John surgery he indicated that he always wanted to go out on his own terms. He also was weirdly excited because he has been pitching with pain for the last 4-5 years. The 37 year old feels like he has more left in the tank and it sounds like he wants to pitch again in 2025.
