All-Pro Suddenly Emerges On Trade Block (NFL)

The 2023 NFL off-season figures to be a hectic one.  It could mark the second off-season in a row that the Green Bay Packers are involved in a league-changing trade.  In the last off-season, the Packers traded away Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in a shocking move.  This off-season the Green Bay Packers could potentially move on from their four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.  Another star player that could potentially be moved is Lamar Jackson.  Today it was announced that yet another superstar player is on the trade block during the 2023 off-season.

Cornerback Jalen Ramsey Is Reportedly On The Trade Block

Per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network:

The Rams have had trade talks about six-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey and league sources now believe it’s very likely Ramsey is dealt in coming weeks. Ramsey, 28, is due $17 million in 2023 on a front-loaded deal that averages $20M and L.A. is clearing cap space.

Jalen Ramsey is coming off an extremely successful season.  Ramsey had a career-high 88 tackles for the Rams last season.  With that he added four interceptions and a career-high 18 passes defensed.  He also recorded two forced fumbles. A three-time first-team All-Pro cornerback, Ramsey made the Pro Bowl for the sixth consecutive season.

The catch will be Jalen Ramsey’s contract.  He is due $17 million during the 2023 season.  Trading him would save a significant amount of cap space for the Rams.  Ramsey’s cap number in 2023 is $25.2 million.  The Rams would save $5.6 million in cap space if they trade Ramsey.  He currently has three years and $74.6 million cap number remaining on a five-year, $100 million contract that started in 2021.  Ramsey gets $7.5 million guaranteed if he’s on the Rams roster on the fifth day of the 2023 league year, which is March 20.

Could The Green Bay Packers Trade For Jalen Ramsey?

The Green Bay Packers already have one superstar at cornerback in Jaire Alexander.  With Eric Stokes and Rasul Douglas still under contract during the 2023 season, the Packers have depth at the position.  However, acquiring Jalen Ramsey could allow versatility within the Packers secondary.  Rasul Douglas has spent time at safety, a position of major concern for the Packers going into the 2023 season.

The biggest hurdle would be 2024 and beyond.  The team that would acquire Ramsey would be on a significant hook for one year of his contract before making a crucial roster decision regarding him for the 2024 season.
