As we continue to look preview each position group for the Wisconsin Football team, we conclude the offensive side of the ball with the offensive line. Like the running backs, this is a strong group with a good mix of veterans and young studs waiting in line. I think this group is one of the best in the Big Ten and something for Wisconsin Badgers fans to get excited about. Here’s how I think the depth chart plays out to start the season:
Wisconsin Football OL Starters: Jack Nelson (LT), Tyler Beach (LG), Joe Tippmann (C), Tanor Bortilini (RG), Logan Brown (RT)
I don’t think there’s much debate. It will be interesting to see how Jack Nelson adjusts after mainly playing guard last season. However, Nelson is certainly the best lineman on this team. He’s a versatile player and can play multiple positions. Most Wisconsin Football linemen can play multiple positions as well.
I did not expect Tyler Beach to return for another year, but I’m glad he did. He only makes this unit stronger. You could argue that this is the best line in the Big Ten.
The biggest question is Logan Brown. He made it through an entire spring for the first time, and I think he will get every chance to win this job and keep it. The former five-star recruit hasn’t been what we thought he would be due to injuries. He has one more shot, and I’m rooting for him.
Wisconsin Football OL Backups: Nolan Rucci (LT), Michael Furtney (LG), Cormac Sampson (C), Trey Wedig (RG), Riley Mahlmann (RT)
If anyone in this second unit has a chance to start, I think it’s certainly Riley Mahlmann. He’s an absolute stud, and I think he will give Logan Brown fits in fall camp. I believe Brown initially wins the job, but don’t be surprised if Mahlmann is potentially the starter by the end of the year. He’s that good.
In addition, I think we’ll get to see Nolan Rucci and Trey Wedig get meaningful snaps too. Rucci is a five-star recruit, and a monster get for the Badgers. Expect both players to be starters next year.
Not only should Wisconsin Badgers fans be excited about the starting line, but they should also be excited about the young trio of Rucci, Wedig, and Mahlmann. There’s potential Wisconsin Football could lose four staters after this year. Paul Chryst loves to use multiple linemen in a rotation. As a result, these young players will play. It will just be a matter of how much.
