Wisconsin Football: Could the Badgers Aim to Flip a Dominant 2024 Michigan Signee?

Following the movement of the Michigan staff, the Wisconsin football recruiters and plenty of other programs are watching recruits closely.

Dominic Nichols, a 2024 three-star signee for the Michigan Wolverines, has been vocal over X (Formerly known as Twitter) about the recent staff changes. Nichols was once a top target for the Wisconsin football staff, but eventually chose the Wolverines over the Badgers after meeting with former Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. Now, the disgruntled recruit could end up playing for another program.

Flip Watch: Could the Wisconsin Football Staff Try to Bring Back Dominic Nichols?

Dominic Nichols has been a player that was on the radar of the Wisconsin staff from the moment they had taken over. Nichols is a powerful, high-motor type of player that truly fits the mold of athletes that Head Coach Luke Fickell has been after. The edge rusher is never satisfied and consistently pushes himself and his teammates both on the field and in the weight room.

The leadership mentality that Nichols possesses has been one of the most attractive qualities the recruit has to offer. Nichols is a defensive leader with the potential to lead a collegiate defense, which is exactly the hope that the Badgers had. However, Nichols ended up committing to the Wolverines following a meeting with then Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who has since left for the NFL.

Nichols was clearly emotional about the move, since he posted a tweet of a crying face in response to the Harbaugh move. Harbaugh also took staff members with him, including his longtime strength and conditioning coach, who had also been very close with Nichols. The recruit also posted a tweet of a broken heart following the other Michigan staff announcements, which could be a sign that he no longer feels Ann Arbor is home.

Wisconsin Badgers Football Staff Eagerly Recruiting Transfer Portal, Commitments Following Staff Moves

There is no doubt the Wisconsin football staff has been aggressive following a 7-5 season and a loss in their Bowl Game. The staff is aiming to land the best players they can both in and out of the transfer portal, which they have done an exceptional job at thus far. However, Wisconsin is still eyeing more available players as they continue to feel their roster out.

The Badgers may very well add another player or two to their roster, but it depends on how fast the Wisconsin staff will be able to move.

Is a Flip Likely for the Wisconsin Badgers Staff this Late in the Cycle?

While a commitment flip in the favor of the Wisconsin Badgers football program would be lovely, it likely will not happen for a multitude of reasons. The main reason why the Badgers likely will not flip anyone is due to how late in the process it is. The overwhelming majority of the 2024 class has already signed their letter of intent, and despite being upset or hurt by movements of their future staff, they are already deep into a commitment.

It is possible to leave a letter of intent and sign a different one with a program, especially when the Head Coach leaves the program since it re-opens a temporary portal for the team. However, most recruits accept the differences and play for the team despite the changes.
