The Wisconsin Badgers football program entered the 2023 season with high hopes and dreams of championships.
However, as week seven approaches, the fans are now hoping to stay bowl-eligible at the very least. The 4-2 Wisconsin Badgers team has struggled each week without putting together a full game just yet. Wisconsin is fresh off a miserable 15-6 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes, reaching their newest low this season.
With starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai officially out for the season, Wisconsin will look elsewhere to save their season.
Can Braedyn Locke Save the Wisconsin Badgers Football Season?
Coming into the 2023 season, Wisconsin fans expected a complete change under Head Coach Luke Fickell. The idea was that Fickell would carry over his success and culture from the Cincinnati Bearcats. However, it seems as though the difficulty of winning in year one was underestimated by most.
Now, six games into the season, the Wisconsin Badgers football team sits at 4-2. Both the Washington State Cougars and the Iowa Hawkeyes bested the Badgers. The Badgers have struggled to find their identity, while the offense has been a complete flop thus far.
Starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai and Offensive Coordinator Phil Longo were set to be a match made in Heaven on paper. Yet, the duo struggled through six games before Mordecai went down with a hand injury. Now Wisconsin must turn to one of their many backup quarterbacks.
Among the quarterbacks is the 6-foot tall, strong-armed veteran Braedyn Locke. Locke took over for Mordecai after the starter went down against Iowa but certainly did not light things up. With Locke set to start against Illinois, can the transfer save the Wisconsin football season?
Wisconsin Football Must Turn to Back-Up Quarterback For Remainder of 2023 Season
For Locke, his chance to become the starter for Wisconsin football could not come at a more crucial time. Wisconsin is set to face Illinois and Ohio State in their next two games as the Badgers attempt to hold onto bowl eligibility. The Badgers certainly have the talent and means to win enough games to secure a bowl, but they may not have the morale to do so.
This past week against Iowa, Locke was thrown into the starting quarterback role and produced mixed results. Locke finished the game with 122 yards, one interception, and two fumbles. Only one fumble was lost, but Locke still finished the game with a quarterback rating of 27.5.
The Wisconsin football offensive line also struggled, allowing Locke to be sacked twice and hit four times as he threw the ball. Star running back Braelon Allen uncharacteristically fumbled for the second game in a row as well. With the Wisconsin football offense in shambles, Locke will have a daunting task ahead of himself.
