We are only two days away from the beginning of the WIAA football playoffs. Everything is on the table now, and it’s win or go home. 224 teams will begin, and that number will be cut in half by the end of Friday night. Here are five level one match-ups you won’t want to miss.
WIAA Football Playoffs: Kimberly vs. Fond Du Lac
Fond Du Lac is responsible for Kimberly’s only loss on the season. The Cardinals defeated the Papermakers 31-21 in Fond Du Lac on Sept. 30. You better believe Kimberly is out for revenge. What better way to do it than the playoffs? This game will also be in Kimberly Friday. For a WIAA Football Playoffs first-round game between conference foes, expect a large crowd at Papermaker Stadium.
Plymouth vs. Pewaukee
It’s crazy to think Pewaukee is a four-seed in the WIAA Football Playoffs. I do understand with a 7-2 record, a team can be anywhere from a two-seed to a six-seed. However, the Pirates’ two losses have come by a combined nine points. I’m confident Plymouth didn’t want to see Pewaukee and neither did first-seed Monroe if they defeat Portage. If we get a Pewaukee-Monroe second-round game, that will be one of the state’s best second-round games.
The Pirates are also the defending division three state champs. They know how to get it done in October and November. This is a big game to watch.
WIAA Football Playoffs: Colby vs. G-E-T
Speaking of a defending state champion being a four-seed, that is the same boat Colby is in for the 2022 WIAA Football Playoffs. The Hornets make the jump up to Division 5 after winning the Division 6 title last season. Colby fell to Auburndale 20-14 last week. Auburndale is an excellent team as well. There were a few head-scratching seeds the WIAA released Saturday. I thought Colby was one of those teams that was under-seeded. If Colby wins, a potential date with top seed St. Croix Falls subsequently awaits in level two.
Chilton vs. Clintonville
Chilton fell in a triple OT thriller to Two Rivers last week for the EWC title. Two early season losses is probably why the Tigers fell to a five-seed and have to travel to Clintonville. According to Wissports.net, quarterback Kade Rosenow of Clintonville is second in the state with 2,264 yards passing. They love to pass, and Chilton loves to run the ball. Consequently, this could be a high-scoring game.
WIAA Football Playoffs: Milwaukee King vs. Kaukauna
According to Wissports.net, Milwaukee King has only given up 27 points all season. It’s been tough to score on them. It’s a long ride for Kaukauna, but the Galloping Ghosts play in one of the toughest conferences in the state in the FVA. They’ve faced teams such as Kimberly, Neenah, West De Pere, and Appleton North. I think this could certainly be one of the best WIAA Football Playoffs games in the state for a 3-6 matchup. Defense and low scoring seem like the motto of this game.
