We are down to the final two of the most important Wisconsin Badgers for the 2023 season! Anytime a team wants to be successful, they have to have good quarterback play. It’s the most important position in the entire sport. As a result, it should be no surprise I have Wisconsin quarterback Tanner Mordecai at number two. Numbers 3-10 can be found below as well.
- Braelon Allen
- Maema Njongmeta
- Phil Longo
- Chimere Dike
- Alexander Smith
- Jack Nelson
- Clay Cundiff
- Chez Mellusi
Why Mordecai
As the new signal caller and starting quarterback this season, Tanner Mordecai is a veteran quarterback who has seen a lot of college football. The sixth year quarterback began his career at Oklahoma for three years before transferring to SMU. In his two years at SMU, he threw for 7,149 yards and 72 touchdowns. It was a very productive two years and it’s not a quarterback Wisconsin has seen come into their program.
With the new air raid offense, good quarterback play is a must. With the new and veteran offensive weapons on this roster, Mordecai has a lot of different tools he can use. With that, the Badgers have the potential to put up a ton of points. The expectations are high this year and it’s on Tanner Mordecai to deliver. There is always some hiccups and a learning curve with a new quarterback in a new system. However, I like the amount of experience Mordecai brings to the table.
What To Expect In 2023
It’s hard to expect 33 touchdowns or 39 touchdowns from Tanner Mordecai. That is mostly because of the very good running game Wisconsin brings as well. They don’t have to necessarily rely on the passing game, but it still has to produce. I don’t think 25 touchdowns is being unrealistic.
As I mentioned earlier this week with Phil Longo, there is always the possibility of some early season grown pains. I think we can expect that from Mordecai as well. I don’t expect that to be long though. With the experience Tanner Mordecai brings, I expect the Wisconsin offense to be crisp by the time October comes around. I also don’t expect a lot of interceptions as I believe he will also take care of the ball and be an effective passer. He did throw 22 interceptions the last two seasons, but that will happen when you are asked to throw the ball a ton. I don’t think Mordecai will be asked to throw the ball around as much as his time at SMU, but he can if he has to.
