Over the course of my segment of the top 10 important Wisconsin Badgers in 2023, we have seen a combination of offensive players, defensive players, and coaches. Numbers 4-10 have consisted of players Wisconsin needs. As we approach the top three, we are now getting into individuals where if they miss time, it could make or break a season. At number three, I am going with running back Braelon Allen. Numbers 4-10 can be found below as well.
Why Allen

Ncaa Guaranteed Rate Bowl
It seems like a long time ago, but Braelon Allen was in the 2021 class and was originally recruited to play safety. During his senior year at Fond Du Lac, Allen was a monster at running back. Just before fall camp opened up in 2021, Allen switched to running back. I can remember in the first game that season against Penn State, Allen was on special teams and played a little bit at back, but he was down on the depth chart. Fast forward to the end of that season and Allen ended up leading the team with 1,268 yards and 12 touchdowns. Not bad for a 17 year old.
In all seriousness, Allen is what makes the Wisconsin offense go. Until proven otherwise, he is the Badgers best offensive player and best offensive weapon. He is a bigger back at 235-240 pounds, but has a ton of speed once he gets to the second level. He is also really hard to bring down. He’s rushed for over 1,200 yards in his first two seasons in Madison. Barring injury or an unproductive junior year, this is likely Allen’s last year at Wisconsin.
What To Expect In 2023

I think we can expect a heavy dose of Braelon Allen especially early in the season. It’s going to take some time for the passing game to be in sync. That’s okay too as it’s a new offense and it needs as many reps as it can. Once the offense is in sync, I think Allen has a chance to have a huge season. The air raid offense is meant to eliminate the eight and nine man boxes, something Allen has had to deal with his entire career to this point. If he can put up 2,500 yards in those boxes, imagine what he can do when there is fewer in the box.
Allen makes a good 1-2 punch with Chez Mellusi and I believe this can be one of the better running back duos in the country. It’s very important Allen stays healthy throughout the season too. He’s dealt with some ankle injuries especially near the end of the season. I believe 1,500 rushing yards is doable and I think Braelon Allen has a good chance to hit that number in 2023.
