Playoff Hope: Two Teams The Packers Will Be Rooting Against This Week

The Green Bay Packers won in Chicago once again.  Or should I say, won at Lambeau Field South, once again?  The win moved the Packers to 5-8 on the season and increased their chances at a playoff spot.  While they are likely vying for that seventh seed, work still needs to be done.  The first matter of business is Green Bay winning every game they have left on the schedule.  They need to have a “run the table” type of stretch.  The Packers’ playoff chances nearly doubled with their win in Chicago.  While the Packers have a bye in week 14, multiple games will impact their playoff chances.  Here are two teams that Green Bay can ill-afford to win this week.

    Team Number One: Seattle Seahawks

Seattle will be taking on the Carolina Panthers this week.  That means that for one week, Packers fans need to be Carolina Panthers fans.   If Seattle beats Carolina and moves to 8-5, the Packers can still bypass the Seahawks on record alone, ONLY if Seattle loses out and the Packers win out.  If they tie (Packers win out, Seattle closes the year at 1-3), Green Bay in our scenario finishes the year 7-5 in NFC games (first tiebreaker). Seattle already has six wins with this week’s win over Carolina, so Seattle would need its one win to come against the 49ers or Rams to activate the next tiebreaker: common opponents.

Team Number Two: New York Giants

The New York Giants play the Philadelphia Eagles this week.  That means for this week, Packers fans need to be Philadelphia Eagles fans as well.  If the Giants beat the Eagles, New York moves to 8-4-1, and the Packers can still catch New York on record alone.  However, it would require New York to lose its final four games (with no ties, either) and Green Bay to win its final four. The Giants close the season against Washington, Minnesota, Indianapolis, and the Eagles again, with only the Colts game at home.

It will be a tough stretch either way but Green Bay will have better odds if both the Giants and Seahawks lose this week.
