An essential starter from the 2023 season appears to be on shaky footing heading into the summer after the Green Bay Packers made an announcement on Tuesday evening. The Packers are in the process of ballooning their offseason roster to 90 players.
Anders Carlson will have to compete for his job this summer

Many players will head into OTAs this spring and training camp this summer fighting for a roster spot. One of those players who will feel extra heat in Green Bay this July and August is kicker Anders Carlson. Carlson struggled as a rookie last season, and a sign he might be replaced came when the Packers signed a quarterback.
The Green Bay Packers are giving Michael Pratt the No. 17 jersey

Carlson won’t compete with Michael Pratt for the quarterback position. However, according to NFL Jersey Numbers, the Packers announced Pratt will wear the No. 17 jersey, the same one Carlson wore last season. This suggests the Packers are ready to move on from Carlson after giving his number to the rookie seventh-round pick.

The Packers signed competition for Carlson this offseason when they added veteran kicker Greg Joseph in March.
The Packers had to make the move after Carlson’s disappointing rookie season. He was the 25th-most accurate kicker last season, making 82 percent of his field goals. Carlson made all of his kicks within the 39-yard line last season. But he struggled from distance, missing six of his 13 field goals from the 40-yard line and beyond.
