The Green Bay Packers have one of the best defenses in the NFL. At least on paper, that is. However, one position of concern is the safety position. While Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are entrenched as the starters, there is concern about the quality of depth. Vernon Scott, by all accounts, has been having a tremendous camp. However, he did not see the field as a defender at all last season due to, well, not being very good. Even if Scott does work out this season, the Packers will still need quality players at the position just in case of injury. As a result of their depth concerns, the Packers signed former XFL and USFL safety Micah Abernathy.
Micah Abernathy at Tennessee
The Packers new safety played his college ball at Tennessee. In four seasons with the Volunteers, Micah Abernathy amassed 194 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and five fumble recoveries. His best season was his sophomore year in 2016. That year, Abernathy had 69 tackles, two interceptions, four pass deflections, and three fumble recoveries.
Undrafted to the USFL
Micah Abernathy went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Minnesota Vikings, but was cut before training camp even began. He then received opportunities with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, but was unable to crack their rosters.
In 2020, Abernathy signed on to play with the XFL’s Dallas Renegades. Unfortunately, the XFL season was short-lived. Though its management claimed it was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league had not being doing well financially. It filed for bankruptcy before being bought by Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
After the XFL folded (again), Abernathy signed to play in the USFL with Houston Gamblers. Last season, he had 68 tackles (ninth in the league), two interceptions, seven passes defended, and one forced fumble.
