The Packers might be in need of a plug-and-play tackle. Yoshiah Nijman played well at left tackle last season but will be slid over to the right to start this season. David Bakhtiari is back but the Packers are hoping that his knee troubles are gone after coming back and then being sidelined almost immediately. They should get Elgton Jenkins back midway through the season which will help. To start though, they might want to take one of these guys.
Round 1 Trevor Penning Northern Iowa 6’7” 325 RAS 9.96
Strengths: High-level athlete evident by high RAS score. A powerful player in the run game who likes to punish. One of the meaner offensive linemen in the draft.
Weaknesses: Technically he is raw. Hand placement can be all over. Needs to work on his feet at the next level to be more consistent. Sometimes slow getting to the second level in the run game.
Round 2-3 Sean Rhyan UCLA 6’5” 321 RAS 8.17
Strengths: Really powerful offensive tackle. Thick legs that can anchor really well. Does a solid job of getting to the second level when run blocking.
Weaknesses: Smaller arms cause him to reach when blocking, and can get off-center. Footwork lacks consistency. May be moved to guard when his shorter arms and lunging won’t be as big of an issue.
Round 2-3 Jamaree Salyer Georgia 6’4” 325 RAS 4.15
Strengths: Big-bodied lineman with a large filled-out frame. Strong legs that make him hard to move off his base. Long arms allow him to be in control of defenders and strike first. Solid combo blocker who can get to the next level.
Weaknesses: Athletically he’s not there evident by his low RAS score. In tight spots, he often ends up on the ground. Even with his long arms, he needs to work on hand placement to be consistent at the next level.
Round 4-7 Austin Deculus LSU 6’5” 321 RAS 8.25
Strengths: Big, strong, explosive tackle. Started his last 4 seasons. Quick feet help him set and recover. Hand placement is top-notch. In the run game, he is a people mover.
Weaknesses: pad height is too high for the NFL game. Hand speed needs to improve to be able to strike players first. In the run game, he needs to take better angles and consistently work to get to the second level.
Round 4-7 Max Mitchell Louisiana 6’6” 307 RAS 5.54
Strengths: Experienced having played a lot of football. Footwork is exactly where it needs to be for the NFL game. Has enough speed to recover if he’s beaten. Better athlete than his 5.54 RAS score indicates.
Weaknesses: He lacks strength on film. Doesn’t anchor well and gets pushed around. He will need to add more strength to his frame to succeed in the NFL. Allowed edge rushers to get around him far too easily in college.
Round 4-7 Ryan Van Demark Conneticit 6’6” 307 9.44
Strengths: He has solid awareness when encountering a stunt or other blitz pickup. Mean offensive tackle that doesn’t mind getting dirty. Van Demar has good technique and understands punch and power.
Weaknesses: Overly aggressive when he doesn’t need to be. Beaten around the edge by speed rushers. Can get his pad height elevated and can be pushed around when that happens.
