There are not many people in the national media that are giving the Green Bay Packers much of a chance to be successful in 2023. Of course, this is because Jordan Love is taking over after 30 years of Hall of Fame quarterback play. Additionally, the Packers are rolling into the season with a very inexperienced wide receiver room.
Indeed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Samori Toure are the most experienced wide receivers on the Packers roster, and none of them played a full season’s worth of games in 2022. That being said, inexperience should not be considered a reason to automatically give up on the team.
For all of the press about the Packers not drafting a rookie wide receiver, Watson had the best season of any rookie pass catcher in the Rodgers Era. Doubs may not have been far behind him if it had not been for a sprained ankle that limited him late in the season.
Green Bay Packers Insider Compares Romeo Doubs to Tee Higgins

Due to his ankle injury, Romeo Doubs only played in 13 games. He hauled in 42 receptions for 425 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers are still high on him, though, and he is expected to be one of the starting wide receivers along with Watson. One Packers insider suggests that fans can expect to see a lot more production from Doubs in Year Two.
In his mailbag article on Saturday, Green Bay insider Wes Hodkiewicz answered a question asking if Doubs can be the kind of number two receiver that Tee Higgins is for the Cincinnati Bengals. Hodkiewicz responded:
“That’s a lofty comparison, but a healthy Doubs has the tools to be a consistent force in Green Bay like Higgins is in Cincinnati. He has a knack for getting open, which is why he started so fast as a rookie.”
Higgins has never had fewer than 900 yards receiving and has over 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last two seasons. If Doubs becomes a second option to the level that Higgins is, Green Bay’s offense is going to be very exciting.
In order to do that, however, Doubs needs to clean up his drops. He dropped nine passes last year, indicating that it was an area that he really struggled in. For the record, Higgins had eight dropped passes as a rookie (and eight drops last year, too).
However, Doubs was also playing with a quarterback with whom he had little chemistry. Now playing with Love, the drops should go down and his opportunities will surely increase. Last season, Doubs had 67 targets as the team’s number two receiver. By comparison, Higgins had 108 in his rookie season.
It is truly too early for a Higgins comparison, but there is no reason to believe Doubs can’t become just as productive. If he stays healthy, he could even be Green Bay’s leading receiver. There are already reports that Doubs and Love are showing a serious connection in offseason activities. If that translates to the field during the regular season, this offense could be a lot of fun.
