Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen recently opened up about the attitude of one of his wide receiver teammates this offseason. It’s hard not to see Allen’s comments in the context of other major issues swirling around the Bills and Stefon Diggs.
Diggs reportedly has issues with the scheme of the Bills’ offense. The All-Pro wide receiver missed voluntary OTAs and some of the team’s minicamp. Allen found a new connection in practice with another wide receiver during Diggs’ absences.
NFL News: Josh Allen comments on Buffalo Bills WR
According to Alaina Getzenberg with ESPN, Allen likes the play of wide receiver Trent Sherfield. Allen made sure to praise Sherfield’s work ethic and positive attitude as his strengths on the offense this offseason:
The ramifications of the Stefon Diggs minicamp drama could still be playing out, but a player who benefited from Diggs not taking part in OTAs and parts of minicamp was Sherfield, one of the Bills’ acquisitions to add depth to the receiver room.
Sherfield got increased opportunities as the Z receiver for quarterback Josh Allen with Diggs not present and made an impression in that time, with Allen saying of Sherfield during OTAs, “I’ve loved what I’ve seen from Trent so far; the dude works extremely hard. He’s one of the hardest-working guys on the team. Doesn’t complain about anything. He’s rolling right now.”
That’s an interesting quote after reports from Buffalo last week regarding the front office’s willingness to trade Diggs. Allen hasn’t levied criticism Diggs’ way this offseason. He’s been vocally supportive of Diggs and has said he wants to find a solution to keep him happy with the Bills’ offense.
“Stef, he’s my guy,” Allen said. “Excuse my … I f—ing love him. He’s a brother of mine. This does not work, what we’re doing here, without him. We wish he was in here today and was out there on the field with us and that’s not the case, but I’ve got his back no matter what. And again, I’ve got no doubt that we will figure out what’s going on. I frigging love him. I can’t stress that enough.”
Allen’s comments on Sherfield suggest that the complaining around the locker room can be a drag to the team. The Allen-Sherfield connection could be something to keep an eye on this season if Diggs and the Bills can’t get on the same page.
And they might not. The Green Bay Packers have benefited from Diggs’ diva status. He chose to leave his poor situation with a Packers’ rival, the Minnesota Vikings.
