Milwaukee Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz had a career night on Friday against the New York Yankees. In the second inning he belted his first big league home run and then in the eleventh inning he ended the game with a walk-off single. He entered that game in a 1-18 slump at the plate but now should have a ton of confidence.
Joey Ortiz hits his first career big league home run (watch).

The New York Yankees had right-handed hurler Luis Gil on the mound. He got ahead of Ortiz 1-2 but then left an off-speed pitch belt high that ended up being crushed into the left field bleachers. This two run blast was the first of Ortiz’s big league career. It took him 82 at-bats, but the moment finally happened and he was able to get the ball authenticated as it bounced back onto the field.

Milwaukee Brewers defeat the New York Yankees in extra innings thanks to a Joey Ortiz walk-off hit.

In what was a back and forth game the Brewers got the last laugh against the Yankees as they won by a score of 7-6 in 11 innings. The Yankees took a 6-5 lead in the 10th, Willy Adames tied the game in the bottom of that inning, and then Joey Ortiz delivered the game winning hit in the 11th.

Since 2014 the Brewers and Yankees have had games that ended in a walk-off at least once per series.

The Brewers and Yankees are no strangers to walk-offs. Since 2014 they have had at least one game per series end with a game winner. In 2014 Mark Reynolds won the game with an RBI single for Milwaukee. In 2017 Clint Frazier of the Yankees ended a game with a three run walk-off homer off of Corey Knebel. Other walk-offs include Garrett Mitchell’s in September of 2022 and then Kyle Higashioka’s walk-off in the 13th inning for the Yankees last year. Joey Ortiz has now continued this impressive streak that now spans five series.
The Brewers and Yankees have two more games left this weekend. Both teams are looking like playoff contenders so it should be an entertaining series.
