The Green Bay Packers have had a solid start to the season. While there definitely have been struggles at times (looking at you fourth quarter against the Falcons), overall the team has looked good. One player has been a big surprise in his position. Pro Football Focus has Daniel Whelan ranked as a top-five punter after two weeks.

Green Bay Packers Daniel Whelan Ranked In Top Five
Whelan sneaks in the top five by being the fifth-ranked punter according to PFF. The special teams transformation continues under coach Rich Bisaccia. After cutting Pat O’Donnell, many questioned if the punt group would have the same effectiveness. It looks like the decision to go with the younger player was a good one. He has had nine punts in the first two weeks and is averaging 49.8 yards per punt. In net yards, he is a hair under 40. This is a great weapon for an offense that is still trying to find themselves. Whelan has the leg to flip the field when necessary.

Great To Have Good Special Teams
Remember the beginning of last year when Amari Rodgers was returning punts? That seems like ages ago. The special teams have completely transformed. Rookie Anders Carlson has looked solid in the first two weeks with fans wondering why head coach Matt LaFleur didn’t give the rookie a chance for a long field goal in week 2. Whelan has been great and Keisean Nixon is always a threat to take it to the house. After years of subpar special teams play, it seems the group is finally operating at a high level.

The Green Bay Packers are loving what they are seeing out of rookie Daniel Whelan. It is yet another instance of a rookie making a huge impact this season. If these players continue to develop, the Packers could be a scary team in a couple of years.
