NFL: Aaron Rodgers is a member of the New York Jets. The legendary four-time MVP quarterback declared his intent to play for the Jets back in March. The trade didn’t become official until late April, just days before the 2023 NFL Draft. Rodgers has certainly made headlines all off-season, and that hasn’t changed since he joined the Jets.
Aaron Rodgers Isn’t Allowing Defensive Teammates “To Have Fun” (NFL)
Jets defensive end Carl Lawson hasn’t seen the benefit of lining up opposite Aaron Rogers so far during training camp. In fact, Lawson said on Tuesday that the play moves so fast that sometimes he can barely get out of his space.
“Sometimes I don’t even think I got better on the play because the ball gets out so fast,” the edge rusher said following the Jets’ first padded practice. “Sometimes, I’m not even getting better, because I’m not even getting out of my space by the time the ball is out. It might be a detriment to me to practice against him if you want the truth.”
“It’ll get you better because you get the best of the best,” Lawson added. “I’m just giving you my real answer. Sometimes, it’s not fun. I want to rush the passer, but the ball is out before I can even get a step in the ground. It’s good for the defense, but for me, I want to work my move, but the ball is out.”
“It’s kind of crazy. This whole offseason everyone’s talking about Aaron Rodgers, and I’ve just been working, like, ‘Oh, it’s cool, we got Rodgers,’ “Lawson said. “It’s just not really in my world. It’s not like I’m avoiding it on purpose. It’s just not really there. I’d much rather focus on training and food and other stuff that just part of life.”
Carl Lawson was posted his most sacks (seven) since his 2017 rookie season with Cincinnati and the second-most QB hits of his career (24, behind his 32 for the Bengals in 2020). The Jets defense around Lawson seems to be ready to match if not surpass last year’s rise up the rankings to No. 4 in 311.1 total yards allowed/game and No. 2 with 4.84 yards allowed/play.
Is Aaron Rodgers Making His New York Jets Teammates Better?
Rodgers is certainly making his offensive teammates better. Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson had another impressive day on Tuesday, hauling in a pair of long completions from Aaron Rodgers. The highlight was a 35-yard touchdown down the right sidelined, which Wilson hauled in in stride for the would-be score.
The chemistry between Rodgers and Wilson continues to grow with each passing practice. It may only be July, but it seems pretty apparent that Rodgers has found a new favorite target in the Jets’ 2022 first-round pick. However, how much is Rodgers helping the defense if he isn’t allowing the defensive line a chance to pressure the quarterback? That will remain to be seen. It has been no secret over the years that Rodgers has one of the quickest releases in the NFL.
