MLB Rumors: Veteran designated hitter Nelson Cruz was designated for assignment by the San Diego Padres last week. A report from Ben Nicholson-Smith has now indicated that an AL East contender is expressing interest in the seven time All-Star.
Throughout his career the 43 year old has spent time with the Brewers, Rangers, Orioles, Mariners, Twins, Rays, Nationals and Padres. The team that is now reportedly interested in signing him is the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto Blue Jays reportedly expressing interest in Nelson Cruz (MLB Rumors)
Entering the All-Star break the Blue Jays found themselves with a 50-41 record, seven games back in the division, and tied for the second Wild Card spot. They are looking to upgrade offensively and Nelson Cruz could be the situational player that they need.
At this point in his career Nelson Cruz is no longer a 40 home run and 100 RBI type player, but he has been good against southpaws. His career slash line against left-handed pitchers is .292/.378/.550. It is true that over the past few seasons those numbers have dropped, but in the right situation he could excel.
Should the Blue Jays pursue Nelson Cruz he could replace Alejandro Kirk or Danny Jansen as the designated hitter against lefties. Signing him would be a low-risk high reward type deal, so it will be interesting to see if Toronto follows through with this.
