MLB News: The Milwaukee Brewers have seen a lot of talent come and go throughout the history of their organization. Former All-Stars and stand out players like Nelson Cruz, J.J Hardy, CC Sabathia, Prince Fielder, Zack Greinke, Josh Hader, and others have all passed through the organization.
Of the above mentioned players 43 year old Nelson Cruz was still playing Major League baseball for the San Diego Padres. Through 143 at-bats this year he has a -0.2 WAR and 90 OPS+. This had led to the Padres to designate him for assignment.
MLB News: Ex Milwaukee Brewers player Nelson Cruz DFA’d by the San Diego Padres.
A series of roster moves today from the Padres including recalling left-hander José Castillo, right-hander Matt Waldron and infielder Matthew Batten left Nelson Cruz on the outside looking in. San Diego signed him to a low risk $1 million one year deal in which he served as their designated hitter.
The Padres now have one week to either trade Nelson Cruz or pass him through waivers. It’s possible that a trade gets worked out because he has a team friendly contract and is an established veteran player. If neither of these happen odds are he will elect free agency.
