The Milwaukee Brewers are really playing some bad baseball right now. Could be worse, I suppose. They could be the St. Louis Cardinals. However, the struggles of their division rivals do little to ease the frustrations of a team that, year-in-and-year-out, fails to produce consistently at the plate. With the 2023 MLB All Star Game coming up, one has to wonder if the Brewers have anyone (outside of Devin Williams) who is deserving of that honor.
The Athletic, like many national media sites, posts weekly power rankings of all MLB teams. As one might imagine, the Brewers have been falling in the rankings lately. What made this particular rankings article all the more embarrassing for the team is that The Athletic also attempted to predict which players on each team might be first-time All-Stars. And the Brewers, well, nobody really has a case.
MLB Power Rankings Drag the Milwaukee Brewers for Poor Play
Last week, The Athletic had the Brewers ranked 12th among all other Major League ballclubs. This week, they have fallen to 16th and got some pretty (well-deserved) nasty criticism:
“Our little exercise this week allows for a revealing look at the Brewers. The club has stuttered to start this season after — *spit take* — they were swept by the dreadful A’s over the weekend(!). Milwaukee’s lineup is filled with All-Stars from the past, including Devin Williams, Christian Yelich, Corbin Burnes and William Contreras.
“But collectively, they’ve yet to take off. A storybook season would have seen shortstop Willy Adames finally breaking into the All-Star game as a first-timer in his sixth season, after some pretty good years. But, nah, he’s like the rest of the Brewers, still stuck in second gear. Did we mention the Brewers were swept by the A’s?! Egads.”
Ouch. The 2023 season is truly looking like it will be a disappointing one. While there is still plenty of time for them to turn it around, there are outside rumors that bring a sort of cloud over the organization. David Stearns is rumored to be bolting for the New York Mets after the season is over, and there is some speculation he could take Craig Counsell with him. American Family Field needs hundreds of millions of dollars in repairs. Brewers ownership doesn’t want to pay for them and neither do the Wisconsin taxpayers.
For the first time since Stearns and Counsell took over, the future does not look so bright for baseball in Milwaukee.
